From my students:
"This adaptation really helped kids and adults because once people break
past the barrier of general understanding, they can really appreciate the
play."
Anna Dydzuhn, Westover School
Played "Celia"
16 Years old
"The adaptation opened the play up to a lot of different age levels--it
was not only great for kids but also for adults who don't understand
Shakespeare."
Elizabeth Peterson, Westover School
Played "Rosalind"
16 Years old
"When I think of this adaptaion, I think of "Baby Shakespeare," that is, a
younger Shakespeare writing a simpler version of the same play."
Pia Furkan, Westover School
Played "Amiens"
14 Years old
...and from me:
"In Richard Carter's adaptation of "As You Like It" the integrity of the
original play is maintained while the story is made accessible to
audiences. I directed an all-girl's high school production (a fun twist on
the all-male casts of Shakespeare's day) and received rave reviews from
students, parents and fellow faculty. My young actors appreciated Carter's
easier-to-memorize rhymed verse and the abbreviated scenes and
contemporary humor appealed to the kids in the crowd. The 90-minute
format allowed for an actor- and audience-friendly evening in the theatre.
It is the perfect way to get "turned on" to Shakespeare."
